Four former workers from the Phurnacite Works in Cynon Valley, South Wales have won their claims for compensation after developing Lung Cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

The High Court Judgement agreed that there was convincing evidence that the lung diseases could be caused by the work processes at the Phurnacite plant, which closed in 1990. The judge rules that despite concerns about the dust and fumes produced from the manufacturing process, the operators of the plant failed to take sufficient measures to reduce the risk of their workers developing injuries or illnesses. It is hoped that this decision will now lead the way for the other 166 former workers from the group litigation to also receive damages.
