Merlin Entertainment, the owners of Alton Towers, have accepted full responsibility for the crash which has left 5 victims with life changing injuries.
A total of 16 people were on a carriage of the Smiler ride, when it crashed into an empty carriage which had stopped part way through the ride.
Leah Washington, who was sat at the front of the ride, is considered to have received the most serious injury to her left leg, which had to be amputated above the knee, as well as fracturing her hand. Her boyfriend who sat next to her on the ride, Joe Pugh, suffered intensive hand injuries as well as two broken knees.
Merlin Entertainment sent hand delivered letters to the crash victims over the weekend, accepting full responsibility for the injuries caused, regardless of the outcome of the investigation into the cause of the accident.
It is pleasing to see the stance that Merlin Entertainment has chosen to take towards the victims of this horrific accident, but could this accident have been avoided? It remains to be seen as the company carry out their investigations.
No doubt it will be some time before the victims recover from this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this very difficult time.
