Five members of staff have been arrested after allegations of misconduct in public office, following a police investigation into the Medway youth detention centre in Kent.

Previous arrests were made in January in relation to child neglect and assault charges. This followed a BBC documentary which alleged staff at Medway Secure Training Centre were using inappropriate restraining techniques and falsifying documents and statistics.

It has since emerged that there have been previous allegations of abuse at the centre over ten years ago but no investigation was made at the time.

There have been a number of recent police investigations into allegations of physical and sexual abuse at youth detention centres across the country, including Medomsley in County Durham, Whatton in Nottinghamshire and Kirklevington in Yarm. No decisions have been made by the police and the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to any charges being brought against alleged offenders.
