The Abbot of Ampleforth College, Right Rev Cuthbert Madden is being investigated over alleged child sex offences.
Father Cuthbert who is 61 was elected Abbot in 2005 and has been at Ampleforth College for 30 years. His position as Abbot means that he is the head of the largest Benedictine Community in the country.
Allegations have been made by four former pupils of Ampleforth College which is a Catholic Boarding School. Father Cuthbert has stepped down from his role as a chairman of governors whilst the investigation takes place. He denies the allegations.
The allegations date back to the 1990’s when Father Cuthbert was a junior monk and tutor at the college. There have been previous allegations relating to sexual abuse by priests at Ampleforth College in the last 20 years and three monks have been convicted of historic sex offences.
The allegations are being investigated by North Yorkshire Police. The Police have stated, “The information was reported to the Police in August 2016. The investigation remains ongoing and a man in his sixties has been interviewed under caution. The Police investigation has also triggered safeguarding measures which have been put in place while the investigation continues.”
The acting headmaster, Father Wulstan Peterburs has written to all parents and in a recent inspection was found to be, “fully compliant with all aspects of safeguarding.”
