Mr Brian Altman QC was appointed on 10 January 2017 as the senior lawyer for the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in England and Wales. He will take over from Ben Emmerson QC, who quit the inquiry in September 2016 following allegations of sexual assault and harassment. Ben Emmerson QC has now been cleared of both allegations.
Mr Altman has spent 16 years as the treasury counsel, and for the last two-and-a-half years as first senior treasury counsel. Mr Altman has advised on and prosecuted in some of the high-profile cases such as the abduction and murder of Milly Dowler by Levi Bellfield and the case of John Downey, the man accused of killing four soldiers the 1982 IRA Hyde Park bombing.
The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse was set up in July 2014 to investigate the allegations made against public bodies and non-state institutions in England and Wales. The Inquiry will look into whether the public bodies and non-state institutions have failed to protect children from sexual abuse. The Inquiry will make the necessary recommendations for changes in the future.
