Former head teacher Colin Gregg, 75, has been convicted of nine counts of historic sex abuse and sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court to 13 and a half years in prison by Judge Mairs.

Colin Gregg was found guilty of abusing four young boys over a 30 year period. Colin Gregg is the son of the founder of the chain of Greggs Bakery.

The married grandfather was found guilty of indecently assaulting the boys, who were aged between 11 and 14, from the early 1960s until the 1990s. Each of the victims was under 15 years of age at the time the offences took place.

Judge Mairs told Gregg: “This was sophisticated predatory behaviour, you are a sophisticated predatory paedophile. The damage you caused will last and has lasted much longer than any sentence I can impose on you. You were trusted with the care of young boys and abused that repeatedly, in the most horrendous fashion. The impact on them is life long. You have, as I have said, not a shred of remorse or not a pine of conscience for what you have done.”

Newcastle Crown Court heard how Gregg, abused his victims in a swimming pool, in a car and at his home gym.

In powerful statements, two of Gregg’s victims told of the devastating impact the pervert’s actions had on them.

One of the victims said: “Mr Gregg was a man who I had invested an enormous amount of trust and respect in. It was impossible for me to believe that he could have done what I know he did to me. Mr Gregg’s abuse of power and trust left me with an extremely cynical and mistrustful view. It took a long time for me to develop the maturity to comprehend the reality of what actually happened to me.

John Dilworth, from the CPS, said: “Colin Gregg appeared to be a successful businessman, respected teacher and committed charity worker. But he exploited his position in society to abuse young boys.”
