The pre-pay funeral sector is to fall under the control of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) following an announcement by HM Treasury.

Additionally the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating the whole of the funeral industry and not the pre-pay funeral sector. The investigation comes after concerns about that lack of service provided by Funeral Directors which impacts consumers ability to make informed decision.

This has come after pressure from Consumer Lobby Groups which highlighted a number of concerns, ranging from a lack of guidance for customers, the inability to raise concerns as a result of poor service and pressure selling by ‘pre-pay funeral providers’.

There can be good reasons for arranging a pre-paid funeral, such as to ensure that your family does not have to arrange funding for the cost of your funeral at what is an upsetting time, but clearly there are also concerns about them.

As pre-paid funerals are financial products, we are unable to advise on particular policies, but we can advise you as part of planning your Wills and putting your affairs in order in relation to the various ways in which your funeral can be funded.  If you are concerned about a pre-paid funeral plan which have already entered into, or you are dealing with an estate and consider that the plan was not appropriate in the circumstances, we would be pleased to discuss the position with you.
