Allegations of historical physical and sexual abuse at William Henry Smith School in Brighouse are being reviewed by West Yorkshire Police.
William Henry Smith School was opened in 1961. The school, which still operates today, was a school for children with special educational needs. In recent years the school was subject to a criminal investigation after a number of ex-pupils alleged both sexual and physical abuse by staff at the school between the 1960s and 1980s.
In 2013 thirty ex pupils of the school received compensation for the alleged abuse they suffered when they were at the school.
West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that “the review of the case was in its early stages”. Their previous investigation resulting in “one man being taken to trial and retrial” and that other prosecutions could not be brought due to “evidential difficulties”.
A former pupil who received compensation has confirmed that no charges were brought by the Police following his complaint.
He describes that he was,” both physically and sexually assaulted while attending the school from the age of 12.”
He said: “The kind of memory of it is going down the awful long mile-long driveway and just literally crying my eyes out.”
Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Bainbridge has made the following statement:
“Those coming forward with historic allegations should feel confident in the knowledge they will be listened to and their allegations will be taken seriously. We will seek to prosecute those responsible wherever possible and will always seek to get justice for victims, regardless of the time past.”
