Manish Shah, 50, was a family planning specialist, has been given three life sentences for ninety assaults on female patients. Shah was convicted for assaulting 23 women and a 15-year-old girl while carrying out examinations for his own sexual desires. The assaults were carried out from May 2009 and June 2013. He was found guilty of 25 sexual offences against six victims at Mawney Medical Centre last autumn.
The Old Bailey heard how Manish Shah used celebrities Angelina Jolie and Jade Goody to scare his patients into letting him examine them. Shah used the example of Angelina Jolie undergoing a preventative mastectomy just so he could examine and fondle the victim’s breasts. Shah used example of Goody’s cervical cancer so that he could intimately examine another victim. It was reported that Shah left one victim entirely naked on the examination table.
The Old Bailey heard that Shah would not always wear gloves whilst examining the victims.
Judge Anne Molyneux described him as a:
“master of deception who abused his position of power”.
The judge further said:
“Your behaviour was not only sexual but was driven by your desire to control and on occasions humiliate women,”
“You made up stories which got into heads and caused panic,”
She sentenced Shah to a minimum of 15 years in prison.
The youngest victim told the court she was left “anxious, fearful and shaking” at the prospect of visiting the doctor after the abuse. She described how she now felt differently around men and was worried about being seen as a sex object.
Shah claimed that he was practising “defensive medicine” and not were not assaults.
He was convicted of offences in 2018 relating to 18 other people. The total number of offences against him total 90 and relate to 23 patients.
The court heard how Shah picked up on patients’ vulnerability, because of their age or family history of cancer.
Outside court, Det Supt Tara McGovern said Shah:
“placed himself in a busy surgery as a GP and accessed vulnerable women and preyed on their vulnerabilities so that so he could carry out unnecessary clinical examinations for his own sexual gratification.”
“He has caused significant harm to these women and has betrayed the trust they placed in him as their doctor.”
“It’s been a long process – we’ve spoken to 130 women, we’ve taken dozens of statements and so we thank the victims for their patience.”
