Knowl View School in Rochdale was opened in 1969 as a school for young boys with learning and behavioural difficulties. It was closed down in early 1995. The school is the subject of a number of investigations by both the police and the government.
A former staff member, David Higgins, was convicted in 2002 of indecently assaulting young boys at the school. Since the latest police investigation began, over 35 further suspects have been identified and over 20 men have been interviewed under caution about similar allegations. In addition to this a separate investigation has focused on allegations of sexual abuse made against the former liberal MP, Cyril Smith, although he is now deceased and therefore cannot be prosecuted.
The police also launched a separate investigation into an alleged ‘cover-up’ of what happened at Knowl View following allegations of destruction of evidence by Rochdale Council. The government have since taken over this investigation and are urging anybody with any information about what the council did to come forward to assist with the inquiry.
