Shadwell is a children’s home in Leeds that has been subject to allegations of physical and sexual abuse between the 1960 and 1990s.
Shadwell is also one of a number of children’s homes in the Leeds area being investigated by West Yorkshire Police under ‘Operation Polymer’ which has resulted in the conviction of two former members of staff. Ex Deputy Principal Melvyn Blake was sentenced to 16 years following trial in March 2017 at which he was found guilty of serious sexual offences against four boys. Leonard Lake was convicted of 2 counts of indecent assault and received a 2 year prison sentence. Lake had previously been convicted and served a prison sentence following a conviction for similar offences in 1993.
