St Johns Catholic School is a school for deaf children in Boston Spa, Wetherby. The School was originally opened in 1870 and remains open to this day. It functions as both a normal day school and as a boarding school.
It has been widely reported that one member of staff in particular at the school was subject to a number of complaints regarding sexual abuse of pupils. This was Father Neil Gallanagh, who was a resident chaplain at the school during the 1970s. In 2005 he pleaded guilty to a number of sexual offences against two former pupils and received a 6 month suspended prison sentence along with a £1,500 fine.
Jordans have achieved out-of-court settlements in 2008 for seven men who were sexually abused by Gallanagh while they were at the school, and we continue to represent further Claimants in actions against the school.
