Alarming number of sexual abuse reports at hospitals across the UK

Abuse Generic 2

Following an investigation it has been found that thousands of reports of sexual abuse have been made from UK hospitals.

Freedom of Information requests were sent to 43 different police forces in England and Wales in order to assess how many reports of sexual assault and rape had been made.  28 responded and the figures were incredibly disturbing. 2,569 reports of sexual assault and 743 of rape had been made to the police as taken place on hospital grounds. These reports were dated between January 2022 and January 2025.

Of these reports only 158 resulted in a charge. In five police areas, being Surrey, Nottinghamshire, Durham, Warwickshire and Staffordshire there were no charges made in regards to any of the reports of rape and sexual assault.

The highest number of reports were made in Northumbria with 315 reports of sexual assault and 377 reports of sexual assault or rape on a ward. The least number of reports were made in Staffordshire with only 3 reports of sexual assault and 5 reports of sexual assault or rape on a ward.

Unfortunately, only 16 of the reports made in Northumbria resulted in a charge.
