If you have suffered sexual abuse or neglect as a child, then you could make a compensation claim.

In this area
If you are a survivor, or parent or guardian of a survivor of child abuse, you know the lifelong and far-reaching impact it can have.
Whilst nothing can change what has happened in the past, compensation can help you to take control of your life and get the justice you deserve. It can help you to move forward, seek any support you require and start to rebuild your life.
Our sexual abuse department is one of the most prominent in the country and has been instrumental in paving the way in this area of law.
Our lawyers are specialists trained in this area and have extensive experience in abuse compensation claims, having handled national cases on behalf of large groups against bodies such as social services and the church, sports organisations and detention centres, as well as representing many clients taking action against another individual.
At Jordans Solicitors we specialise in claims for redress schemes, non-recent abuse Claims, sexual abuse claims and claims against organisations.
We have the knowledge and experience to advise you on the available options for pursuing a claim and we have successfully represented the interests of abuse survivors nationally for over two decades.
We understand how difficult it can be for you to talk about the abuse you suffered during your childhood. That’s why our specially trained abuse solicitors work closely alongside psychologists and barristers to support you both emotionally and legally and you can be sure that your claim will be handled with the utmost levels of professionalism, sensitivity and understanding.
Get in touch with us on 033 0300 1103 or request a call back and we’ll be in touch to arrange a free, no obligation meeting with a member of the team. Alternatively, you can book an online appointment here.
Civil abuse compensation claims do not cover domestic abuse, however there are circumstances in which you may be able to make a claim through the CICA scheme. In order to make a CICA claim for domestic abuse you must have separated from your partner and be living separately.
If you are suffering from domestic abuse and need to apply for a Non-Molestation or Occupation Order, our family team can assist, see here for more information.
The prospect of going to court and reliving such emotional incidents can be extremely off-putting for many people who could be entitled to compensation.
However, in most cases, it is possible to settle a claim without the need to go to court. More than 98% of child abuse compensation claims handled by Jordans Solicitors are settled out of court, meaning that you won’t be expected to attend a court hearing at any stage of your abuse claim.
In the event that your case does go to court, our expert child abuse lawyers can give you clear advice on how to handle the process and support you throughout.
We understand that reliving your experiences in court can be difficult, which is why our child abuse law experts are specially trained to provide you and your family with the support that you need.
Confronting an abuser is often a big concern for survivors of child abuse. Over 98% of our child abuse compensation claims are settled out of court. This means that it is very unlikely you will have to face your abuser.
But, if your case does go to court, our child abuse solicitors will give you clear advice so you know what to expect. We’ll also put your wellbeing first and make sure that you have all the support you need throughout your claim.
Child abuse compensation varies on a case-by-case basis, but we will advise you on how the courts will assess your compensation claim and how that could affect the sum you receive.
To calculate compensation for your abuse claim, factors like psychological impact, physical injuries or interrupted schooling and loss of earnings are all considered.
It’s not just monetary compensation that our child abuse lawyers fight for. We will also ensure that, if necessary, you also receive emotional support to help you carry on with your life.
If you are the parent or guardian of a child abuse survivor, you can claim compensation on their behalf. Under child abuse law, you can also claim compensation if your loved one died as a result of child abuse or if they do not have the mental ability to make their own legal decisions.
We take your confidentiality seriously. We understand that this is of the utmost importance in cases which can be highly sensitive and complex. All medical experts, child abuse solicitors and barristers that we involve in your case are under a legal obligation to keep your identity and personal information completely confidential. You can rest assured that your identity and personal information will be kept completely confidential and dealt with sensitively.
Financing an abuse claim can be a major concern for many people who may be entitled to compensation, with potential costs involved becoming a barrier. However, here at Jordans Solicitors we may be able to take your case under a Conditional Fee Agreement, also known as a “No win, No fee Agreement”.
At your initial consultation, our experts will advise whether you qualify for a No Win, No Fee service and explain in full the terms of such an agreement. In brief, as long as you stick to certain obligations, such as providing regular instructions, you will not be charged unless we secure you compensation, either by out of court settlement or through legal proceedings.
If you are not successful, you will be charged nothing, hence “No Win, No Fee”. If your claim is successful, the defendants are responsible for your basic legal costs. Your solicitor will then be entitled to a “success fee” payable from your damages, which is calculated as a percentage of the legal costs. In most cases, this success fee will be capped by agreement. All of this will be explained in full at the start of your case.
Our specialists are often asked by clients about how their compensation from an abuse claim will affect their benefits. Your benefits can be protected by setting up a trust and our expert lawyers will be able to advise you further on this.
Learning that someone you care about has been harmed is extremely upsetting and can feel overwhelming.
Its not unusual to struggle to know how to respond in the best interests of the survivor, whilst also dealing with your own emotions., and for many survivors, having support is an important part of healing.
Our partner charity Safeline has an article on how friends and family can help survivors, providing help and guidance for those in this situation:

We believe that justice for survivors should be accessible no matter how long ago it happened. That’s why we fought for a landmark change in the law, which allows an abuse claim to be brought before a court regardless of when it took place.
Our Head of Department, Jane Matthews, is an accredited panel member of ACAL, and we work closely with many charities such as NAPAC, IDAS and Safeline to support those affected by abuse.
Jordans Solicitors have helped thousands of survivors of abuse nationally.

My case was around historical sexual abuse that I suffered as a child. I was very anxious about approaching this subject but the level of care and understanding I received from first contact to conclusion was first class. I was put at ease and everything was explained to me in language and terms I was able to understand. The advice I received was clear and unbiased, I was not pushed in to any quick decision making rather give the time and assistance I needed to help me make an informed choice.

It was a particularly delicate matter and they dealt with us and other parties in a sympathetic and professional way, and explained the whole process so we understood what was happening and what was expected from us. We highly recommend Jordans Solicitors.

Jordans Abuse Team
They have been thorough, professional and simply awesome. It might have been a long road we were on but every time I phoned for updates someone was always happy to comply. Having nothing but my best interests in the forefront.. we won! And it was so worth the wait.

Jordans Abuse Team
They are honest, friendly and compassionate, from the receptionist, to the solicitor assigned to your case. They dealt with my case, in a timely manner and kept me up to date, every step of the way, and the professionalism was beyond reproach.
Tina Le Moal, Head of ISVA Services, Safeline:
"I have worked in this space long enough to know that the right partners are rare. Jordans are one of them. From the moment a survivor connects with their team, they are met with compassion, patience and genuine choice. No pressure, no rushing, just honest guidance that puts the person at the centre of every decision. They sit with our clients, they explain their options, and then they let them decide. That is not standard practice in this sector, and it matters more than I can say."
Client Testimonial
I didn’t think that I’d have a case due to the fact the sexual assault had happened some time ago, but Jane Matthews spent months working on my case and due to the support and hard work of Jane and her colleagues my case was successful. The organisation accepted responsibility and paid out compensation. Money was not the end goal for me it was ensuring the perpetrator wasn’t able to do the same to anyone else. Because no criminal charges were bought against the defendant due to evidential issues, this outcome for me was some form of justice. I cannot thank Jane and her team enough for everything and I would always recommend speaking to Jordan’s even if you think your case isn’t strong enough, they will do what they can to help you through every stage of the process.
Client Feedback
"You have not only helped to get me justice, but also restored hope and faith in humanity for me again. Thank you for your time, efforts, energy and courage. The world needs more people like you, fighting the good fight for those who have suffered in silence for far too long. Thank you for all you have done, and all that you are, a beautiful soul. Thank you for being a big part of my journey to heal.”
Case Study - A claim for child sexual exploitation
Jane Matthews successfully settled a claim for a client arising from child sexual exploitation she suffered as a child placed at children’s homes and foster placements whilst under the care of the local authority. The Claimant was sexually and physically assaulted by multiple Asian males between the ages of 11 to 17 years. The Claimant did make a report to the Police, but one of the issues that it was necessary to overcome in the civil claim was that the Claimant was unable to identify the males and the Police did not pursue her complaint. Evidence was secured from the social care records, and this was presented to the Defendant. Based on this evidence, our client received a a negotiated settlement of £70,000.
Case Study - A Claim against the Church
Jordans Solicitors successfully represented the Claimant in a claim against the Parish of All Saints Church, Little Munden. The Claimant suffered abuse by a Reverend in the Parish in 1963/1963. The abuser was deceased, but the Church found a 1964 letter which confirmed that the Reverend had admitted to sexually abusing a choirboy (the Claimant). The Claimant located this letter prior to submitting the claim and we were able to use this letter as evidence of the abuse. The claim settled successfully for £17,500, and also included treatment being arranged for the Claimant by the defendant’s insurance company.
