Hill End Abuse Redress Scheme Closes 23rd March 2026

The Hill End Hospital Adolescent Unit in St Albans, Hertfordshire, operated from 1969 until its closure in 1995. Intended as a psychiatric treatment facility for vulnerable children, former residents have since revealed a history of unlawful sedation, physical assaults, sexual abuse and other mistreatment at the hands of staff.
Following historic reports of abuse and the findings of Operation Meadow confirming that sedation practices at Hill End did not meet acceptable standards of care, a Redress Scheme was agreed in 2024 between the Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust and the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.
The Redress Scheme is designed to provide financial compensation and recognition for the suffering of former patients who were unlawfully sedated and/or subjected to abuse.
To date, over £2.5 million in compensation has already been awarded, with many survivors receiving five-figure settlements under the Scheme.
However, it’s vital to understand that the Hill End Redress Scheme will close on 23rd March 2026. If you were a former patient at Hill End and have not yet submitted a claim, time is running out. Once the Scheme closes, you could lose the opportunity to receive compensation and formal redress for what you endured.
