Historic abuse trial set for 2027: Two men face charges relating to Coed Glas Assessment Centre

In a significant development stemming from a long-running investigation into historic child abuse at a former Welsh assessment centre, two men are set to face trial in 2027 for a string of serious offences.
Robin Griffiths, 65, from Bideford in Devon and Angus Riddell, 69, from Rhondda Cynon Taf, stand accused of 45 charges between them, including cruelty, indecent assault, and attempted indecent assault involving boys and girls under the age of 16.
The alleged incidents took place between the 1970s and 1990s at the Coed Glas Assessment Centre in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, which closed in 1995.
The charges follow an extensive investigation by Gwent Police into reports of physical and sexual abuse at the facility, which once served as a temporary placement centre for vulnerable children. The case highlights the long-term impact of institutional abuse and the commitment of authorities to seek justice, even decades after the alleged crimes occurred.
The trial of both men is scheduled to begin on 18th January 2027 at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, which is expected to last up to three months. Riddell’s defence team had sought to argue for a later trial date, however, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke emphasised the need for the trial to proceed at the “earliest opportunity”, underlining the urgency and seriousness of the charges.
A further case management hearing has been set for 27th February 2026 to ensure readiness ahead of the lengthy trial.
Both Riddell and Griffiths have been released on bail pending trial. As the date approaches, this case is expected to draw considerable public and media attention, serving as a reminder of the importance of accountability for institutional failures, no matter how much time has passed.
