How to support your mental health – resources for reaching out

Many of us will experience some form of poor mental health or mental illness but, while  there is plenty of support and understanding in the community, it can be difficult to know where to look. 

Therefore, following on from our series of blogs in support of Mental Health Awareness Week, focusing on the importance of reaching out, today we wanted signpost useful resources to help. 

Mind UK

Mind is a leading nationwide charity dedicated to raising awareness and offering support to individuals seeking support with mental health. They operate a 24/7 hotline, where you can be heard and understood, as well as around 100 Local Mind organisations running community mental health services. These services include counselling, crisis help, talking therapy and advocacy. Anyone can get in touch with Mind, but you can ask your GP for a referral.

Samaritans 

The Samaritans provide support to anyone in emotional distress, feeling unable to cope or contemplating suicide. They operate throughout the UK and can be contacted by telephone or email, whichever is most suitable for you.

Safeline 

Safeline is another UK-wide charity who focus on helping survivors of sexual abuse and sexual violence come to terms with their experience and supporting their mental wellbeing. They provide free online chat, telephone and face-to-face counselling services for both individuals and families, including the National Male Survivor Helpline. 

Safeline also provide support through their Independent Sexual Violence Advocates programme, whereby trained advocates can attend meetings with victims, as well as providing both legal advice and guidance when dealing with other support agencies.
