Oldham to receive funding for inquiry into grooming gangs

The government have announced funding will be available to Oldham in relation to the inquiry into grooming gangs
The government have recently confirmed that Oldham will receive funding in relation to an inquiry into grooming gangs.
The government have been receiving pressure to try tackle this issue in relation to grooming gangs and child sexual abuse. They have made multiple announcements since January.
The government have advised that funding will be available to five different areas. Four of which are yet to be announced.
Home office minister, Jess Phillips, has said that she expects the inquiries to go further than the five areas already announced.
She has said that she has met with child sexual abuse survivors from Oxford, Birmingham, Rochdale, Rotherham and Oldham. She added to this by stating ‘I know exactly the issue of the cover up as does everybody already because of the many local inquiries that have told us this happened, and the national inquiry that has told us that were cover ups.
What we must focus on is making sure, like happened in Telford, that there is a local process of accountability that actually changes things on the ground, and this is what I will do.’
In addition to the above, shadow home secretary Chris Philp has also expressed how the government measures announced so far did not go far enough. He has said that the five local inquiries into grooming gangs ‘just won’t do.’
