Sexual Grooming and Exploitation

Survivors often don’t realise they are being groomed or exploited. They may feel responsible or even believe they agreed to what happened, but this is never the case.
Sadly, victims carry this burden for years and years before they feel able to talk about their experiences they faced. But know that it is never too late to talk and get the support they may need.
We often believe that abusers will look a certain way, but in reality, abuse can happen to anyone at any time. This is why it often remains hidden in the shadows, making it difficult for many to come forward and seek the help they deserve.
This month serves as a reminder that we all have a role to play in creating a safer world for everyone. By raising awareness, we empower survivors to share their stories and begin their healing journeys, whilst also creating a more informed and compassionate society.
Recently an episode of Channel 4 documentary 24 Hours in Police Custody was broadcast on the life of paedophile Carson Grimes, 69 years old, from Luton.
Several new victims of Grimes came forward over the next few months, which revealed the scale and extent of his criminality was far greater than feared. This reiterates how important it can be to come forward and bring awareness to these types of crimes.
Grimes was given an extra five life sentences after pleading guilty to 24 new charges in relation to 13 new victims which dated all the way back to 1987. His first sentencing hearing followed a seven-year probe.
The fact that survivors had been strong enough to stand up and reveal the abuse, meant that Officers and the public were able to see the severity of his crimes.
