PM Law closure and what this means for clients

Following the unexpected closure of local law firm, Wilsons Solicitors in Horsforth, we understand this may be a worrying and difficult time for clients, particularly for those with an ongoing legal matter or if they held legal documents such as your Will.
Below is a summary of useful information of what you should know if you were a client of a law firm under the umbrella of PM Law;
On Monday 2nd February, PM Law Limited was closed unexpectedly following an intervention from the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA).
PM Law included a number of firms, under different trading names, including Wilsons Solicitors in Horsforth.
When the SRA intervenes in a law firm, it means that it:
- Takes possession of all client files and documents
- Takes control of all money held by the firm (including client funds)
- Closes the firm immediately, if it is still trading
- PM Law can no longer act for any clients.
A separate firm, Gordons LLP, has been appointed to assist the SRA with the practical aspects of the closure. Their role is to manage files and guide clients on next steps, but not to continue legal work on individual cases. It is important to note that they will not be acting for you. Their role is limited to securing and managing files, assisting with the administrative process and advising clients to find alternative legal representation.
They will not carry out legal work on your case, even if urgent.
What Should You Do Now?
Instruct a new solicitor as soon as possible, especially if you are contractually committed to buying or selling a property, have an upcoming court hearing or there are urgent deadlines.
Even if your matter was nearly complete (such as post-completion work following a house purchase or remortgage) or you had just written a Will, you will still need new representation to finalise any outstanding steps.
What Has Happened to My File?
Physical Files - files relating to ongoing matters are being collected from PM Law’s offices.
Once collected, they will be scheduled by the SRA before being transferred. This process will take place over several weeks, and urgent requests will be prioritised first. At present, no timescales have been provided for individual file requests.
Electronic Files - Access has been secured to PM Law’s case management system and electronic files. Electronic records can be sent to clients or their newly appointed solicitors.
Do I need my file before instructing a new Solicitor?
No, you do not need your file before appointing a new solicitor. You simply need to provide your new solicitor with:
- Copies of any correspondence or documents you hold
- Details of other parties involved in the matter
- Contact details of any other solicitors involved
Your new solicitor may be able to obtain necessary documentation directly while waiting for the official file.
Your new solicitor will also be able to advise you on how to request your file from PM Law.
Will I need to pay for legal services again?
If you believe PM Law (or other trading name) was holding money on your behalf, owes you money, or if you have to pay again for work already completed, then you may be eligible to apply to the SRA Compensation Fund.
The Compensation Fund is discretionary and operates under specific eligibility criteria. Claims are prioritised according to urgency. Details on how to apply are available on the SRA’s website.
What About Wills, Deeds, and Stored Documents?
Wills, title deeds, and other stored documents will be collected by the SRA’s archives team for safekeeping.
To request archived documents, contact [email protected] or call 0204 525 0250.
For property deeds – in many cases, ownership records are held electronically by HM Land Registry. You may be able to obtain property information directly online via GOV.UK.
Whilst this may be a worrying time, the best first step to take is to appoint a new solicitor as soon as possible. They can help move your case forward as quickly and smoothly as possible while ensuring files and funds are properly secured.
