Do I need a solicitor to apply for a divorce?

You do not need to appoint a solicitor in order to apply for a divorce. However, it is recommended that you obtain legal advice and may wish to instruct a solicitor to deal with the case, especially if you anticipate that there may be procedural difficulties or there are related financial matters which will need to be resolved.
Having a solicitor will ensure that the paperwork is completed correctly, otherwise there is a possibility that the application will need to be amended, which could cause a significant delay.
In order to apply for the divorce, you will need the original or a certified copy of your marriage certificate and the contact details for your spouse. If your marriage certificate is not in English, then you will need to obtain a translation from an accredited translator. If you do not know the current whereabouts of your spouse, then attempts will need to be made to locate them. We are able to assist in obtaining a copy or translation of your marriage certificate, appointing an enquiry agent, or any other issues that may arise.
