Great Ormond Street Hospital: families lash out at reports of disgraced surgeon

Former NHS surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital, Yaser Jabbar, stopped treating patients in June 2022 after concerns were raised about his work. 

Mr Jabbar carried out procedures like leg lengthening, and straightening. He left the hospital in 2023 after it was found that some surgeries had been “inappropriate”, and some cases linked to him resulted in harm. 

Patients were physically and mentally injured, some were left with life-long injuries and amputation. 

A report by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2023 confirmed that each of the surgeon’s 723 patients would receive an independent report to determine the level of harm they suffered. The reviews were carried out by other specialist surgeons, who did not work at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Families have begun to receive the reports and have shared this with the BBC. Many of the reviews were concluded “without any interviews or interaction” with them, the parents said. The reviews were based on the patient’s notes, but one mother told the BBC that the surgeon was “known for not writing up records or keeping them correctly”. Families have described the reports as a “whitewash” and have accused Great Ormond Steet Hospital of “failing their children”. 

The hospital responded to the BBC’s report: “We completely appreciate that for families who have experienced pain and distress these findings may never feel adequate. We will always discuss concerns families may have and will do our best to ensure patients get the care and support they need going forward”.
