Can I claim for injuries from violent crimes?

Many people may not be aware that you can claim compensation for injuries sustained as a result of a violent crime.
The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) are a government agency who pay compensation to innocent victims of violent crimes.
If you have sustained physical or psychological injuries as a result of a violent crime, Jordans Solicitors may be able to assist you in the process of applying for compensation through the CICA.
There are criteria to be met in order for an application to be successful:
- The crime must have been reported promptly and the injured person must co-operate with the police investigation.
- You must submit the application within 2 years from the date of the assault.
- You should not have an unspent criminal record.
There are several scenarios which constitute a ‘violent crime’, including but not limited to:
- A physical assault
- Domestic violence
Information regarding which injuries the CICA will offer compensation for can be found on the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme [2012] guide however, this can range from physical injuries such as fractures, burns and lacerations to mental injuries, including PTSD, anxiety and depression.
The process involves submitting an application detailing the circumstances, injuries sustained and treatment received. Once submitted, the CICA may request further details from yourself or your GP directly to assist in understanding the severity of your injuries. Once investigations are complete, CICA will consider the value of your injury against their tariffs.
