Including your Dog in your Will – How to protect your Pet’s Future

For many of us in the UK our dogs are part of the family, but few people stop to think about what would happen to their beloved pet if they were no longer around.
Making provision for your Dog or Pet in your will ensures your companion continues to receive love and care and prevents confusion or distress for your loved ones.
Why include your Dog in your Will?
Under UK law pets are classed as personal property, much like a car or piece of furniture. That means you cannot leave money to your dog directly but you can decide who should care for them and set aside funds for their upkeep.
Without a clear plan, your dog's future could be uncertain. Relatives may disagree on who should take them or worse they could end up being rehomed or sent to a shelter. A few simple steps in your Will can prevent that.
Choose a suitable carer
The first and most important step is to nominate a trusted person to take ownership of your dog.
Before including them in your Will:
- Talk to them to ensure they are happy to take on the responsibility.
- Consider their lifestyle, health, and living arrangements.
- Choose a back up carer in case your first choice cannot take your pet.
Set aside money for your dogs care
While you cannot leave money directly to your dog, you can leave a cash legacy to the chosen carer, with a request that it be used for your pets care.
Consider a Pet Trust
In the UK, formal pet trusts can be difficult to enforce as the animal cannot be a direct beneficiary. However, some people set up a discretionary trust where trustees manage funds for the dogs care and pay expenses to the nominated carer.
Leave Care Instructions
Include a separate letter of wishes alongside your Will detailing your dogs routine including feeding, walks, sleeping arrangements, favorite toys, medical history and vet contact details, grooming or medication needs.
Including your dog in your Will might not be something you have thought about before, but it’s a simple loving act that safeguards your pets wellbeing.
By taking the time to plan now naming a carer setting aside funds and keeping your wishes clear you can make sure your faithful friend is looked after exactly as you would have wanted.
