Abuse in the British Army
Compensation Claims for Sexual Abuse

For several years, we have reported and commented on sexual abuse of both men and women in the Armed Forces. The combination of cultural, structural and operational factors has enabled conditions in the British Army in which young recruits and soldiers have been sexually abused and harassed.
We help the survivors of abuse and harassment to seek accountability and compensation through a civil claim against the Ministry of Defence.
Whilst we cannot change what has happened, making a claim is a small step towards taking control of your life and getting the justice you deserve.
History of abuse in the Army
Grooming, sexual abuse and harassment within the armed forces is often perpetrated by more senior ranks on highly vulnerable recruits and young adults. The power imbalance is amplified in the army because service personnel are taught to follow the orders of those senior to them. That enables a toxic culture that tolerates or ignores inappropriate behaviour and systemic failures.
It can also make it difficult to challenge misconduct and abuse. The survivors of sexual abuse and harassment are often discouraged by officers from reporting it and complaints can be discouraged and ignored.
The survivors of sexual abuse are predominantly, but not exclusively, female including female recruits under the age of 18. Male recruits and soldiers are however also sexually abused and harassed.
In 2025, it was reported that hundreds of women were sexually abused in Army medical examinations between the 1970’s and 2016 in institutional settings where recruits felt they were unable to object to the abuse because the abusers had absolute power over them.
Recently, (August 2026), the BBC reported on the sexual abuse of a significant number of young women at the Army Foundation College in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, with allegations being made against both employees at the college and other junior soldiers who were training there.
