Chris Brain convicted of sexual abuse charges

Church abuse 1

The Nine O’ Clock Service – which was also known as NOS – was an alternative Christian service in the diocese of Sheffield where hundreds of young people worshipped from 1986 to the mid 1990’s. The services took place at St Thomas’ Church in Crookes, Sheffield and at Ponds Forge leisure centre in the city centre.

The services stopped in 1995 after allegations of sexual abuse, emotional abuse and exploitation were made by members of the group who had attended.

The Service which has been described as a cult-like movement was founded and led by Chris Brain who was a Christian rock musician. It involved loud rave music, bikini clad dancers and light shows. He resigned his position in late 1995.

Brain was yesterday convicted of 17 charges of indecent assault against 9 women at the Inner London Crown Court. He was found not guilty on another 15 further charges. The jury are still considering another 5 charges.

The court were told during the trial that some of the survivors of the abuse had been part of a “homebase team” who also became known as the “Lycra nuns” due to their tight-fitting clothes. They looked after Brain and his every need including “sensual” massages.

Brain admitted sexual relations with up to 6 of the women but alleged that they had been consensual. The prosecution argued that “any capacity they had to consent had been removed by the domineering nature of the defendant, by his control over their entire lives, and by their absolute terror of being ostracised”. He denied the other alleged assaults.

Jordans solicitors are acting on behalf of vulnerable children and young adults whom it is alleged were sexually abused in faith institutions.

Compensation is a small step towards taking control of your life and getting the justice you deserve.

We understand how difficult it can be for you to talk about the abuse you suffered during your childhood or as an adult. That’s why our specially trained child abuse solicitors work closely alongside psychologists and barristers to support you both emotionally and legally.

Justice for abuse survivors should be accessible no matter how long ago it happened. That’s why we fought for a landmark change in the law, which allows an abuse claim to be brought before a court regardless of when it took place.
