June 15th 2026 – World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day takes place on 15th June each year, providing a crucial platform to raise awareness about the abuse and neglect experienced by older adults. Unlike some awareness days, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day remains fixed on the same date every year, ensuring consistent advocacy and education efforts to protect the rights and well-being of seniors.
The World Health Organisation provides the following definition, which includes abuse in both community and institutional settings:
“Elder abuse is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. This type of violence constitutes a violation of human rights and includes physical, sexual, psychological, and emotional abuse; financial and material abuse; abandonment; neglect; and serious loss of dignity and respect.”
Older people tend to be more vulnerable to abuse for a number of reasons. Factors such as cognitive impairment and incapacity often mean decisions are made on their behalf, which may not always be for their best interests or benefit.
In 2021, a report by the House of Lords described abuse of older people, particularly those with dementia, as “complex, poorly measured and hidden.”
It is important to keep an eye out for any of the below signs of abuse that could happen/ be happening to older loved ones:
- Physical signs such as unexplained cuts, bruises and wounds
- Low self-esteem
- Extreme behaviour, including angry and emotional outbursts
- Signs of malnutrition
- Missed medical appointments
If you suspect an elder is being abused, it is crucial to report this to your local authorities or the Adult Safeguarding Unit in Social Services.

Lasting Powers of Attorneys
LPAs can be an essential tool for someone unable to manage their affairs due to loss of mental capacity or health issues making physically going out to manage their affairs difficult. However, as highlighted in a recent case, acting under a Power of Attorney comes with a significant responsibility and the consequences of misusing that power can be devastating.
