Ongoing investigation into Rotherham police sex misconduct claims

Unfortunately, sexual offences and misconduct involving on and off duty police officers has been reported in the media on a regular basis over the last few years.

In one of the latest scandals, six women have come forward over the last six months and made complaints about non-recent child exploitation and sexual abuse by South Yorkshire Police officers.

There is an ongoing investigation by South Yorkshire Police’s major crime unit under the direction and control of the Independent Office for Police Conduct which commenced after the first complaint was made in October 2024.

There has been criticism in the past of forces being able to investigate allegations against their own officers.

Two former South Yorkshire Police Officers who were based in Rotherham were arrested in late 2024. One, a retired police constable in his 60’s, is being investigated in relation to allegations of attempted rape, three counts of indecent assault and misconduct in public office between 1995 and 1999. The second a former police officer in his 50’s, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and indecent assault in connection with an incident in 1995/96.

A further retired police officer from South Yorkshire Police in his 50’s was arrested on 31 March 2025 on suspicion of raping a teenage girl in Rotherham in 2004. He was released on bail.

Assistant Chief Constable Hayley Barnett from South Yorkshire Police has stated “Our first priority in this case, and always, is the victims and survivors. Since the publication of the Jay Report 10 years ago, we have built a much deeper understanding of child sexual abuse and exploitation and will ensure anyone reporting such crimes is treated with sensitivity, compassion and respect”.

“It is never too late to report if you are a victim or survivor of child sexual abuse and exploitation. I am acutely aware of how difficult it can be to report such crimes, particularly when the suspects are serving or former police officers, but we are steadfastly committed to securing justice as required”.

If you are the survivor of sexual harassment or sexual assault by a police officer then you may be able to pursue a civil claim against the police or make a claim to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.

Jordans solicitors are acting on behalf of vulnerable children and young adults whom it is alleged were sexually abused in a number of different types of institutions.

Compensation is a small step towards taking control of your life and getting the justice you deserve.

We understand how difficult it can be for you to talk about the abuse you suffered during your childhood. That’s why our specially trained child abuse solicitors work closely alongside psychologists and barristers to support you both emotionally and legally.

Justice for child abuse survivors should be accessible no matter how long ago it happened. That’s why we fought for a landmark change in the law, which allows an abuse claim to be brought before a court regardless of when it took place.
