Hill End Hospital
If you were a patient at Hill End Hospital Adolescent Unit in St Albans and experienced physical or sexual abuse, you may be entitled to make a compensation claim.
Whilst nothing can change what has happened in the past, compensation can help you to get the justice you deserve.
Hill End Hospital operated from 1969 to 1995, providing psychiatric care for teenagers under the age of 16. The hospital was intended to treat teenagers with psychiatric illnesses and mental health issues, many of whom were vulnerable and under care orders.
The unit was managed by Dr. Peter Bruggen (now deceased), a Consultant Adolescent Psychiatrist, whose treatment methods have since come under serious scrutiny. Hospital records reveal the routine use of high doses of antipsychotic drugs, often not for therapeutic benefit, but as a means of punishment, control, or staff convenience.
Former patients have described disturbing and traumatic experiences, including being forced to consume sedatives, exposure to physical and sexual abuse and unlawful strip searches.
Former patients who suffered unlawful sedations, physical or sexual abuse, can submit a claim under a dedicated redress scheme.
Whilst nothing can change what has happened in the past, compensation can help you to take control of your life and get the justice you deserve. It can help you to move forward, seek any support you require and start to rebuild your life.
Many survivors have now come forward to submit their claims for compensation.

There are several routes that a survivor can take to seek justice for the abuse they were subjected to.
The purpose of redress schemes for survivors of abuse are to acknowledge and provide recognition of the abuse which has been suffered in certain institutions or from certain perpetrators. A scheme’s remedies usually include one or more of the following; compensation, an apology, counselling and support.
Redress schemes provide an alternative to the Civil Court procedure and are simpler and less challenging. You can submit a claim without the need to go to court.
